Now not only is my work consistent with my personal ethos, but this work helps me in my own recovery, as I still take it one day at a time. The Fortune Society gave me this work opportunity, to professionally be of service to others. I simply believe in the power of people to change, and that we should always lift up people to allow them a fair chance for success in the community.
As someone who has been sober now for over 10 years, it is a great opportunity to help other people find safe and stable homes, especially in combating apartment screening policies that make no sense, that focus on the unchanging past instead of who the person is today. Many of the participants (people I strive to help) have addictions, but have been sober for years. At The Fortune Society I work to find safe, stable, and affordable apartments for people who often face blanket bans (total bans/barriers) against anyone with legal system involvement.
